About the Journal

Egghead – A Journal of Art is a double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal of the visual arts, published by the Department of Fine Art, Faculty of Environmental Design, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. It appears twice a year, one volume to a year: Number 1 in April and Number 2 in November.

Our purpose

Egghead was founded in 1963 by the Department of Fine Art at Ahmadu Bello University, the home of the Zaria Art School. After a long silence it returned to publication with Volume 6, Number 1 in November 2025, and its cover still carries the design H. & E. Taylor made for it in 1963.

The journal publishes critical thought, empirical research and theoretical reflection in painting, sculpture, drawing, graphic and industrial design, art history, art criticism and the allied disciplines. It rests on the conviction the Department has held since it began: that the studio and the seminar room are complementary sites of inquiry, and that making, reflection and critique together produce knowledge. Practice-based research, in which the artwork is both the process and the outcome of the study, is therefore as welcome here as the historical or theoretical essay.

Egghead gives particular attention to research that addresses Nigerian and African realities — indigenous knowledge, material culture, cultural heritage and the social questions artists respond to — and places them within regional and global discourse. Contributions are welcome from researchers, educators, artists and designers at any institution.

Open access

Everything Egghead publishes on this site is free to read and download from the day it appears. There is no subscription and no paywall.

Submissions

The subject areas we cover and the manuscripts that fall outside our remit are set out on the Aims & Scope page. Submissions are made through this website, and the Author Guidelines carry everything an author needs: manuscript preparation, images and permissions, referencing, how review works, fees, ethics and copyright. Published work is in the Archives.
